Everything they own, behind one line of doors.
What was wrong
Two wardrobes, a chest of drawers, a clothes rail behind the door and a chair that had become a shelf. The room was big enough; it was just holding six pieces of furniture that each solved a quarter of the problem.
They stayed in the flat throughout, which set the whole schedule: no dust for more than a week at a time.

What we changed

One wall, floor to ceiling
Flush doors painted the wall colour. Hanging, shelves, drawers and the suitcases, all in the depth of the old wardrobes.

The bed wall, plastered flat
The old picture rail and two layers of wallpaper came off. Lime plaster, one colour, no skirting joint to collect dust.

Light that works at both ends of the day
Reading lights on the wall instead of lamps on the floor, and a dimmer by the door as well as by the bed.
